Established in 1993, the Al-Mahdi Institute is committed to providing an open platform for critical Muslim scholarship through its education, research and outreach initiatives. Its unique approach to training future generations of thinkers assimilates traditional seminary scholarship with modern approaches to the study of Islam, leaving students well-equipped to contribute meaningfully in both academic circles and grass-roots communities. Through its long-term commitment to both intra and inter-faith dialogue, the Institute’s activities provide a platform for diverse religious voices to learn from one another.
AMI’s Hawza combines classical Islamic & Arabic studies taught in the eastern seminaries of Najaf & Qom with a western approach. Taught entirely in English, AMI’s HP equips students with the necessary skills required to specialise in a range of subjects including Usul al fiqh, Islamic philosophy, theology, Arabic syntax and grammar etc. All students applying to study AMI’s Hawza Programme residentially are eligible to apply for a scholarship which awards full tuition fees, residential accommodation and monthly stipends.
Students who graduate from AMI’s Hawza Programme can now obtain a Postgraduate Master’s degree in Islamic Studies awarded by and studied at the University of Birmingham (UoB), in the final year of the Hawza Programme, allowing students to pursue a wider range of careers on completion. Having explored classical Arabic texts in the first three years of the Hawza Programme, students will have the opportunity engage with material that is at the forefront of contemporary academic research in Islamic Studies, mainly with a historical, sociological, contextual, legal, or philosophical emphasis.
